Floods in Thame river continues to erode coastal land

Solukhumbu, Aug 17: The flooded Thame river in Khumbu Pasanglhamu rural municipality-5 of Solukhumbu continues to erode the coastal area. Since the flood in the River on Friday afternoon erosion continues in the areas around the Khumbu and Lower Solu.

According to Laxman Giri, police inspector of the District Police Office, although the water level in the river has receded erosion continues. The flood swept away 20 houses and lodges, a health post and a school in Khumbu Pasanglhamu rural municipality, ward no.5.

The power house of the local power project was completed damaged while 200 meters of trekking route from Phakding to Namche Jame area has been washed away. Deputy Superintendent of Police Dwarika Prasad Ghimire shared that Nepal Army and Nepal Police personnel were deployed for rescue and relief to the flood affected and survivors.

So far, 93 people have been rescued from the flood affected areas and provided shelter in an army camp while 42 people are taking shelter in a local community building. Five families of Mapyadudhkosi Rural Municipality-6 have been relocated by the police.

Meanwhile, the Mapya-Khumbu friendship bridge over the Dudhkosi river connecting Khumbu Pasanglhamu rural municipality and Mapyadudhkosi rural municipality was damaged by the floods. As a result, direct road network from Saleri to Khumbu has been disrupted.

Chairperson of Everest Pollution Control Committee, Lamakaji Sherpa, said that the flood may be a result of an outburst of a glacial lake in the Khumbu area.

Chief District Officer Devi Pandey Khatri shared that a team of the Central Disaster Management Committee along with Defense Minister Manbir Rai is arrive today for on-site inspection of the flood-affected areas.
