Berlin– World leaders gathered at the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue (BETD) on March 18-19 to discuss strategies for phasing out fossil fuels and accelerating the global shift to renewable energy. The discussions focused on sustainable energy solutions and the urgency of transitioning to cleaner power sources.
Germany, a longstanding partner in Nepal’s energy sector since 1974, is expanding its support beyond hydropower. Initial collaborations began with the Marsyangdi Hydroelectric Projects, but in recent years, German assistance has extended to biogas, solar PV for rural areas, and solar mini-grids.
In a strategic move, the partnership is now prioritizing improvements in Nepal’s energy infrastructure. The 220 kV Chilime-Trishuli and Lekhnath-Damauli transmission projects are currently underway, with an additional distribution project in development. Alongside infrastructure expansion, Germany is also providing technical assistance for policy reforms and capacity building in Nepal’s energy sector.
With abundant renewable energy resources, Nepal is emerging as a crucial player in the global clean energy transition. Its hydroelectric projects serve as both a national power source and a model for sustainable energy development. The strengthened collaboration between Nepal and Germany reflects a shared commitment to accelerating the transition to clean energy and advancing sustainable development.
