Kathmandu, Jan 12: The Nagdhunga tunnel way is awaiting a breakthrough as only 73.60 metres is left to work.

Breakthrough in the evacuation tunnel which is 2.55 kilomeres long was already completed in August 2023.

So far, 51 per cent of the concrete’s work inside the tunnel is completed and the workers are not preparing to fix tunnel facility after the completion of the tunnel jobs.

The length of the main tunnel of the project is 2,688 meters. The Nagdhunga Tunnel Construction Project is the first of its kind in Nepal and its objective is to improve the road condition around the Nagdhunga pass, thereby contributing to achieve the smooth transportation network and improve commercial activities between Kathmandu and other cities in Nepal. It would also save time and reduce the consumption of petroleum products and reduce air pollution. The construction of the tunnel began in October 2019 and is expected to complete by April 2024.

The project’s engineer Ramesh Prasad Koirala said that two megawatt of electricity is needed to install the power supply and other tools. Koirala added that 24-hour dedicated power supply would be brought from the 11KVA transmission station of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).

However, the disputes in the compensation for the land acquisition have delayed the construction works as the issue of compensation has been a key demand of some locals.
