Globally the equivalent of one football pitch of soil is eroded every 5 seconds. Yet, it takes 1,000 years to generate 3 centimetres of topsoil.
“As we observe World Environment Day 2024, we celebrate the Australian partnership with Asia and the Pacific, home to over two-thirds of the world’s population, in tackling issues surrounding land restoration, desertification and drought resilience,” according to the Australian Embassy.
Extensive agriculture, deforestation, unmanaged urbanisation and sprawl are contributing to land degradation, leading to desertification and droughts.
In Nepal, Australia has partnered with ICIMOD, Ministry of Forest and Environment of Nepal and other government and non-government agencies in building institutional capabilities in integrated river basin management.
