Kathmandu, June 22: Rupa Chaudhary, a farmer from Nepal, was struggling with the production of low quantity maize using traditional farming methods. However, her being part of USAID KISAN II project has transformed her production.
With increased access to new information and quality agricultural materials, she started producing high-yield professional-grade corn, and in 2022 alone, she increased maize production by 60%. She gained 60% more value by selling maize to women-led aggregator partner Annapurna suppliers. It not only increased her income, but also helped her get rid of the need to buy more machines and allow her to expand her farm and manage to build a house. Annapurna Suppliers have helped farmers increase the supply of maize and reduce dependence on imports by providing market management services they need after crops have been transported.
Many farmers like Chaudhary are availing the project, and are increasing their produce by changing their agriculture producing practices with the help of private sector partners under USAID KISAN II project.

Since April 2022, USAID KISAN II has increased corn production by 190%, helping 7,600+ farmers (49% women, 90% marginalised groups) grow professional corn, through 11 collective partners, supplying 15,375 metric tonnes of commercial corn in grain-making mills and poultry farms. This is also bringing Nepal closer to self-reliance.
