Kathmandu, June 22: In honor of Pride Month, the U.S. Embassy hosted an “Employment Skills Development and Awareness Session” for the LGBTQIA+ community this week.
The event saw the participation of over 139 people from 10 diverse organisations. The U.S. human resources team organised training on resume writing, interview skills, and how to apply for U.S. Embassy jobs through the Electronic Recruitment Application (ERA) website.
On the occasion, Daniel A. Smartt, an English language instructor, inspired everyone by sharing his personal journey as a queer person. Smartt’s story pointed out the challenges to deal with the conservative environment during his college years, forcing him to take a different career path for self-protection. But, after 46 years, he has finally found a calling in a field he loves—becoming an English teacher here in Kathmandu.
With a commitment to creating a diverse workforce, the Embassy has been hosting numerous recruiting events to encourage people from diverse communities across Nepal to apply for open positions at the Embassy, wrote the Embassy on a social site.
Pride Month is a month dedicated to celebration and commemoration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQIA+) pride.
“This month, we’re celebrating the wins of the LGBTQIA+ community, honoring the courage of people and communities that have stood up against injustice and discrimination, and raising awareness about the challenges that still loom large for so many.”
