Kathmandu, June 23: The first-ever regional gathering of Dalit lawyers took place in Kathmandu this month. Hosted by the American Bar Association (ABA) Center for Human Rights and Dignity Initiative, the U.S.-government-supported Dalit Justice Defenders Conference brought together 23 Dalit advocates from India, Bangladesh, and Nepal for a transformative four-day event.
At the event, Paulette Brown, a leading anti-racism expert and former ABA President, shared her expertise and anti-bias toolkits for use in the legal sector. Participants, including nine lawyers from Nepal, discussed strategies to combat caste discrimination and bias in the legal sector and foster cross-regional strategic dialogues on increasing access to justice.
On the occasion, the U.S. Government has expressed its commitments to continuously supporting marginalized communities by fostering champions and advocates for greater diversity, social inclusion, and equality for everyone, everywhere.
