Kathmandu, July 9: Lawmakers have demanded that the government inform the House about the losses resulting across the country from floods, landslides and inundation, and also urged it to immediately carry out rescue, relief and rehabilitation works in the affected areas.

Airing their views in the ‘urgent time’ in the meeting of the House of Representatives today, they shared the information that till date 74 people have died, six have gone missing and 86 have sustained injuries while physical losses worth millions have resulted due to the incidents of landslide, flooding and inundation throughout the country.

Narayan Prakash Saud said the country is at present hit by flooding, landslides and inundation while Kanchanpur has also suffered a huge loss of lives and property due to massive flooding. He added that four children have been killed due to floods and landslides. Saud called on the government for the relief, rescue and rehabilitation of the disaster victims.

Stating that the Mahendra Highway has been obstructed due to the inundation, he called on the government to be alert towards adopting effective flood control measures. He further said that the government has not paid attention to constructing embankments along the river banks and as a result many rivers have breached their banks, entered the human settlements and caused damage there.

Mahendra Raya Yadav also said the incessant rain has caused damage throughout the country, triggering landslides, flooding and inundation. He stated the Tarai districts including Sarlahi suffered huge damages and called for starting relief and rehabilitation works immediately.

Yadav also underscored the need of conserving the Chure region to minimize the damage due to the flooding and landslides. On a different note, he said the constitution should be amended only after organizing all-sides discussions.

Landslide and flood have also affected Kailali and Kanchanpur districts of Sudurpaschim Province, said lawmaker Rupa Soshi Chaudhary, drawing attention of the government to carry out activities in order to reduce possible losses forecasting the disaster.

Sharing that the country is now in the phase of political transition, lawmaker Ram Krishna Yadav underlined that the government has failed to pay due attention to resolve problems during this period.

All the bodies of the state along with government should involve in rescue and rehabilitation of landslide and flood victims, he added.

Similarly, lawmaker Purna Bahadur Gharti Magar informed the House about the huge loss of lives and property in Rukum due to landslide occurred there last night, demanding immediate rescue, relief and rehabilitation of the victims as well as treatment to the injured.

Lawmaker Ganga Karki mentioned that landslide and flood have caused huge losses at Gaurishankar rural municipality-9, Rolwaling and Tsho Rolpa trek route.

Informing that landslide and flood have affected Sindhupalchowk , lawmaker Mohan Basnet requested the government to make arrangements  allowing the MPs to go to their districts during disasters and not to mention them ‘absent’ in the House attendance.

He further said two workers of a hydropower project in Sindhupalchowk died and he has been making efforts for the school education to the children of their families and employment to a family member of both families.
