Sunsari, Aug 21: An endangered species of fish has been found in the Koshi river. The fish with the scientific name Amblyceps arunachalens belonging to the catfish group has been listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The fish species, believed to be found only in India, has been found in Nepal, confirmed researchers. Researchers Jashang Limbu, Dipak Rajbanshi, Laxman Khanal, Ramchandra Adhikari, and Sunita Thapal claimed that they spotted the fish in the river.
Researcher Limbu said that the fish was found in the river in the Koshi Barrage area while collecting samples from the main rivers of eastern Nepal from 2019 to 2023 for a fish survey. According to researchers, this fish is rare in the world.
A new species of fish has been found while collecting 700 samples from at least 45 places in all rivers in the east of Tamor and Koshi rivers, said Adhikari, adding that 29 species have been registered.
