Kathmandu, Aug 28: Over 170 Nepali people who traveled to the United States of America illegally have been stranded in Brazil. A statement issued by the Nepali Embassy in Brazil confirmed that 176 Nepali people have been stranded at Sao Paulo Guarulhos International Airport.
The embassy said that the stranded people are safe and preparations were underway to help them. A few days ago, international news organisation, Reuters, mentioned the news that around 700 foreigners, including Nepali people, were stranded at the airport.
According to the statement, there is an increasing trend of people heading to South American countries from various places with the intention of illegally entering the United States through South American countries including Brazil.
“It has been reported that young Nepali people have been lured and taken, by organised human traffickers, to the United States through this transit. It has been found that many people have suffered pain and have to spend a large amount of money for this,” the statement of the embassy states.
Following increasing immigration from third countries illegally, the Brazilian government has decided to allow entry only to those who have an entry permit from their own country. “From now on, Nepalese visitors will be allowed to fly directly to the destination country via Brazil, and if they do not, they will be deported to their own country. But they will not be recognised as refugees, said the statement.
The embassy has also made it clear that this type of travel is illegal, risky and uncertain, which is done by human traffickers. Also, the embassy has requested Nepali people to visit Brazil or other countries via Brazil only with necessary documents and entry permit.
