Discussions held regarding resolving Kathmandu Valley waste management

Kathmandu, Nov 24: The Ministry of Urban Development has held discussions with the stakeholders regarding resolving problems seen in the management of solid waste in Kathmandu Valley. A meeting today of the High Level Committee on Facilitating, Coordinating and Monitoring in Operation of Bancharedanda Sanitary Landfill Site has made various decisions on addressing the problems seen in the management of solid waste in Kathmandu Valley.

On the occasion, Deputy Prime Minister and Urban Development Minister, Prakash Man Singh, underscored on collaboration among all stakeholders for resolving the challenges and problems encountered in managing the Valley waste. The High Level Committee was constituted by a meeting of the Government of Nepal, Council of Ministers on March 10, 2022. “All should follow the required criteria related to waste management. It is necessary for all to pay attention to topics like classification and segregation of waste and recycling. The Ministry will extend the necessary support and coordination to this end,” DP, Singh said.

He stated that the alternatives could be discussed and a way out sought regarding the demands put forth by the local people around the landfill site. DPM and Urban Development Minister Singh stressed on the need of cooperation among the three tiers of the government to resolve the problems seen in this sector.

Sharing about the discussions today, Ministry Secretary Maniram Gelal said that the Kathmandu Metropolitan City will take the responsibility of waste management in the Valley and that various suggestions came up in the discussions regarding addressing the ‘justified’ demands of the locals.

According to him, decision has been made through the discussions today to construct alternative route for transporting waste, to make clear on the acquisition of land at the landfill site and to dump the biodegradable waste in Kathmandu Valley to make fertilizer.

Secretary at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Raj Kumar Shrestha, Bharatmani Subedi of the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration, Mayor of Lalitpur Metropolitan City and President of the Valley Mayors’ Forum, Chiribabu Maharjan, mayors and administrative officers of various municipalities were present in the meeting.
