Kathmandu, March 13: A single font has been developed with the objective of creating a common writing system for 125 languages spoken in Nepal.
The font has been created as per the agreement between the task force formed by Nepal Academy and the Awaran Publications. The task force was constituted to study the development of common writing method of Nepal’s languages.
Artist Ramesh Poudel shared that the font named ‘Dubo’ was designed based on the report of the task force. The font was handed over to the Academy on Tuesday.
Poudel, managing director of Awaran Publications, said that the font ‘Dubo’ with 224 characters is easier to use even though it is in a different layout from the Devanagari and Unicode.
At a programme organized at the Academy on Tuesday, discussions and presentations were also made with the linguists about the proposed font.
On the occasion, linguist Prof Dr Madhav Pokharel expressed the belief that the proposed font would help solve the problems seen in the writing system of many languages that do not have scripts but are spoken in Nepal.
Academy’s Chancellor Bhupal Rai said the new font has been developed with the help of an expert task force and this effort would be very useful.
Chairperson of the Language Commission Dr Gopal Thakur said the proposed font would bring uniformity in the writing of all the languages spoken in Nepal.
Coordinator of the task force Dr Amrit Yonjan Tamang said the proposed font would facilitate the writing the languages spoken in Nepal.
