Kathmandu, May 3: The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) Kathmandu chapter organized a morning procession to mark the World Press Freedom Day today under the banner of ‘Reporting In The Brave New World – The Impact Of Artificial Intelligence On Press Freedom And The Media.’

The procession marched from Ratna Park Shantibatika and concluded upon reaching Bhrikuti Mandap where it turned into a gathering. On the occasion, tributes were offered to all journalists who contributed to the cause of press freedom and the freedom of expression.

Addressing the gathering, senior journalists expressed the belief that the World Press Day would inspire the state to protect the freedom of press and expression and inspire journalists to pursue true, fair, ethical and responsible journalism.

FNJ Chairperson Nirmala Sharma said the FNJ has been monitoring the situation of journalists across the country and the incidents of violation of press freedom have increased this year as compared to the previous year.

She urged the government to take action against the culprits involved in such incidents as the situation of impunity still persists, the killing of journalists has not stopped, constant threats and harassments have been faced and incidents of attacks on the media are taking place.

On the occasion, FNJ General Secretary Ram Prasad Dahal, former acting chair Ramesh Bista and Kathmandu chapter chair Shobha Aryal reminded that Nepali journalism was working as the voice of the voiceless.

They recalled that the Nepali journalism had contributed to the promotion of democracy in the country by remaining at the forefront of the movement for establishing democracy at various periods. They reminded that journalists in the country were still facing various attacks, torture and hassles merely for writing news.
