KATHMANDU: Government has appointed Additional Inspector General Basanta Bahadur Kunwar as the new Inspector General (IG) of Nepal Police, on Friday.
A cabinet meeting held today appointed Kunwar as the new IGP of Nepal Police.
Kunwar’s appointment as the new IGP will take effect after receiving an insignia on Saturday. He will take charge for the next two years. A process of bringing a new federal law to annul 30 years of service has already been taken forward.
Earlier in the day, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba in a telephonic conversation asked Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ to appoint Kunwar to the head of Nepal Police.
The Deuba government had appointed Kunwar to the post of DIG nine months ago. He was promoted as AIG a few days ago.
Other AIGs vying for the post of IGP included Tek Prasad Rai, Deepak Thapa, Syam Lal Gyawali and Kiran Bajracharya.
The post lay vacant after the outgoing IGP Dhiraj Pratap Singh retired today.
Who is Kunwar?
Kunwar was at number 13 among 14 SSPs in the year 2075 BS. But he managed to remain number one when he was appointed as DIG. He maintained the same consistency both in AIG and IGP.
He was born in Sandhikharka Municipality-1 of Arghakhanchi district on March 28, 1970.
Baburam Kunwar, the brother of Bashant, the son of Bhim Bahadur Kunwar and Namkala Kunwar, has become the chief of Gandaki Province.
Inspector General Basant Bahadur Kunwar has wife Lakshmi Parajuli and two sons.
Graduated with Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Tribhuvan University, IGP Kunwar joined the Nepal Police Service from the rank of Police Inspector on March 19, 1995.
Kunwar was promoted to Additional Inspector General of Police on March 20. He became IGP on the fourth day after becoming AIG.
