Kathmandu, Oct 30: A team of 14 climbers from Belgium hasset off on Mt Cholatse expedition. Managed by Seven Summit Treks (SST), a leading Kathmandu-based trekking and expedition company, the team of climbers embarked on the journeyto climb Cholatsefrom Kathmandu, said ThaneswarGuragai, the SST general manager.

Standing tall at 6,440m above sea level, Cholatse, also known as JoboLhaptshan, is a stunning mountain in the Khumbu region of the Himalayas in Nepal.

About Cholatse

Mt Cholatse is connected to Taboche (6,501m) by a long ridge. The Cho La glacier descends off the east face. The north and east faces of Cholatse can be seen from Dughla, on the trail to Mount Everest base camp.

Cholatse was first climbed via the southwest ridge on April 22, 1982, by Vern Clevenger, Galen Rowell, John Roskelley, and Bill O’Connor. The north face was successfully scaled in 1984. The first solo ascent was accomplished on April 15, 2005, by UeliSteck through the north face. Cholatse follows caravan routes flying to Lukla and trekking to Gokyo, climbing GokyoRi for adaptation, continuing trekking to Cholatse Base Camp, returning down to Namche, and final departure from Lukla.

Comparatively, Cholatse peak is very hard to climb than other mountains in Nepal. Since Cholatse is a technically difficult peak, it requires careful ascent. Having experience in ice and rock climbing is required to facilitate the ascent of Cholatse.
