Inauguration of memorial space dedicated to conflict victims in Kailali

Kailali, Feb 22: Women for Human Rights, Single Women Group (WHR) and Kailari Rural Municipality in Kailali district jointly inaugurated a memorial space dedicated to honouring the victims of the conflict period, and the contribution of women to the peace process.

The memorial space, ‘Bankatta Peace Museum’, has displayed the list of 78 people from the community who lost their lives or went mission during the conflict irrespective of their affiliations or circumstances of their death.

Similarly, the display boards feature the women who actively took part in the war and voluntarily laid down their arms in 2006 following an end to the armed conflict on November 21, 2005, as well as the contribution of WHR to improving the lives of the affected women. The exhibition has also displayed the 12-point Comprehensive Peace Accord reached between then the seven political parties and CPN (Maoist).

The peace-building initiative has been supported by KURVE Wustrow, and funded by the German Ministry for Development Cooperation as part of the Civil Peace Service, it has been said.

On the occasion, Minister for Justice of Sudurpashchim Province praised this initiative as the unique form of commemorating people, who have died and gone mission during the conflict.

Similarly, Suman Sharma, Chairperson of the WHR, Sudurpaschim Province, shared the common aspiration to develop and use this space as a peace centre. This museum stands out as a tribute to the martyrs, injured, and missing individuals from the conflict, she added.

The rural municipality chair pledged to continue contribution to improving the living conditions of the affected women. To add flavour to the event, a local Tharu group performed dances, and traditional Tharu dishes were served. The occasion witnessed encouraging participation of people including members of the parliament.
