Dr. Ajit Kumar Sah

Kathmandu, Aug 13: Art is a way of expression. However, one needs a profound understanding and breadth of knowledge for artistic expression that inspires others. I believe that everyone can be a good artist. All it takes is passion and effort to master the skill of making art. Art itself is the biggest field in the world. Everyone can make art and there are so many choices available in the professional market. Mithila painting starts developing on paper and canvas crossing the traditional boundaries and started reaching connoisseurs of art, both at the national as well as the international level.

Mithila art is a vibrant and colorful folk art tradition that originated in the Mithila region of Nepal and India. Its intricate geometric patterns, stylized motifs, and bold use of primary colors characterize it. Mithila art has been practiced for centuries by women in the Mithila region, and it is an important part of their cultural heritage.

Identity crisis is a prevalent issue among the new generation. The lack of a strong sense of identity can lead to confusion and detachment from one’s roots. This is why children and youths must learn Mithila Art, a traditional art form with immense cultural and historical significance. As someone who has dedicated 50 years of my life to Mithila Art, I recently had the opportunity to witness the growing interest of young Nepalis in this art form during my visit to Janakpur. Teaching and learning from these enthusiastic individuals was a truly inspiring experience.

Mithila Art, also known as Madhubani painting, originated in the Mithila region of Nepal and India. It is a vibrant and intricate art form showcasing the region’s cultural heritage and stories. By learning Mithila Arts, children and youths can develop a strong connection with their roots and gain a deeper understanding of their cultural identity. This art form serves as a medium through which they can express their thoughts, emotions, and experiences, enabling them to explore and celebrate their heritage. There has been a growing interest in Mithila art among children and youths in recent years. This is partly due to the fact that Mithila art is a beautiful and expressive art form, but it is also because Mithila art can teach children and youths important skills and values.

Why children and youths should learn Mithila art?

Mithila art can help children develop their creativity and imagination. Mithila art is a free-flowing and expressive art form that allows children to explore their creativity and imagination. Children can use Mithila art to express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences uniquely and personally. Mithila art can help children develop their fine motor skills. Mithila art requires children to use their hands and fingers precisely and delicately. This can help children develop their fine motor skills, which are important for writing, drawing, and playing musical instruments.

Mithila art can help children learn about their cultural heritage. Mithila art is an important part of the cultural heritage of the Mithila region, and it can help children learn about their own culture and history. Children can learn about the symbols and motifs that are used in Mithila art, and they can also learn about the stories and legends that are associated with Mithila art.

Mithila art can teach children important values such as patience, concentration, and perseverance. Mithila art is a complex and challenging art form that requires children to be patient, focused, and persistent. These are all important values that can help children succeed in school and in life. In addition to the benefits listed above, Mithila art can help children develop self-confidence and self-esteem. When children create a beautiful Mithila art piece, they can feel a sense of accomplishment and pride. This can help children develop a positive self-image and a belief in their own abilities.

One of the most significant aspects of Mithila Art is its ability to preserve and transmit traditional knowledge from one generation to the next. By learning this art form, children and youths can tap into the wisdom of their ancestors and carry it forward into the future. Mithila Arts encapsulates stories, mythology, rituals, and everyday life, providing valuable insights into the region’s rich cultural tapestry. Through this art form, the collective memory of a community is preserved, ensuring that its traditions and values are not lost with time.

Learning Mithila Arts also instills a sense of pride and self-confidence in children and youths. As they master the techniques and create their own masterpieces, they gain a sense of accomplishment and self-worth. Mithila Art empowers individuals to showcase their creativity and talents to the world, boosting their self-esteem and encouraging them to pursue their passions fearlessly. This newfound confidence can extend beyond art and positively impact other areas of their lives, enabling them to navigate challenges and achieve their goals with determination.

Moreover, Mithila Art has the potential to provide economic opportunities for children and youths. As the demand for traditional art forms continues to grow globally, there is a market for Mithila Arts both domestically and internationally. By learning and mastering this art form, young individuals can preserve their cultural heritage and create livelihoods for themselves. They can become entrepreneurs, artists, or artisans, contributing to their communities’ sustainable development and helping uplift the local economy.

Mithila Arts fosters creativity and critical thinking skills in children and youths. As they engage in the process of creating intricate patterns and designs, they develop their artistic abilities and problem-solving skills. Mithila Art encourages individuals to think outside the box and find innovative ways to represent their ideas visually. This art form nurtures imagination and promotes originality, allowing young minds to explore their artistic potential and develop their unique voices.

If you want to teach your children or youths about Mithila art, many resources are available to help you get started. There are books, websites, and even online courses that can teach you the basics of Mithila art. You can also find Mithila art classes and workshops in many cities worldwide. Mithila art is a valuable art form that can teach children and youths important skills and values. I encourage you to explore Mithila art with your children or youths, and you will be amazed at the results.

The importance of children and youths learning Mithila Arts cannot be overstated. This traditional art form acts as a bridge between generations, preserving cultural heritage and strengthening the sense of identity. It nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and self-confidence, equipping young minds with essential personal and professional growth skills. Additionally, Mithila Art opens doors to economic opportunities, allowing individuals to thrive while preserving their cultural legacy. Our collective responsibility is to promote and support the learning and practice of Mithila Arts among the younger generation, ensuring the continuity of this invaluable cultural treasure.

[The writer is one of the most imaginative artists of Mithila Art. Sah, whose works till date have been rooted in Mithila culture, adds new dimensions to the Mithila culture with Harmony.]
