Kathmandu, March 4: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has cautioned that it is punishable by law if any worker is found employed for less remuneration than the minimum wages under any pretext.

Addressing the 78th anniversary ceremony of Nepali Trade Union Movement organized by General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT) here today, PM Oli mentioned that it has also been reported that nurses are not getting the minimum wages.

He shared that activities of industries and business could not function well unless workers are satisfied, stressing the need of creating such environment wherein the workers could also be transformed into employers.

“In course of the movement for system change, our friends were killed, but our objectives were not decimated. We were imprisoned, but our goals were not locked away,” argued the Prime Minister.
He opined, “Now, we should move ahead as per the sentiments of change. We should be able to bring government, employers and workers at win-win situation through the medium of dialogue. The government should draw fair conclusion remaining neutral.”

“We are not interested about backbiting as we have to develop and bring change in the country. The tendency to oppose only for opposition has no meaning and I am confident that the workers’ movement is aware about it since before,” mentioned the PM.

In the context of negative impact on human civilization due to the melting of snow in the Himalayas spurred by global warming, Prime Minister Oli urged the world community to collaborate along with the concept of safeguarding humankind from mountains to sea from the climate change impact.

Discussion was also held on the issue ‘Save the Himalayas-Protecting Rights of Workers’ on the occasion where PM Oli’s chief advisor and former Chairperson of GEFONT, Bishnu Prasad Rimal, Chief Advisor to PM Oli, chief of CPN (UML) Class Organisation Mechanism, Bhanu Bhakta Dhakal, Chairperson of Joint Trade Union Coordination Centre, Jagat Simkhada, among others were present.

Mountaineers, disaster rescuers, and concerned organisations were honoured on the occasion.
