Mustang : In Chhusang, Baragung Muktichhetra Rural Municipality-3, a monastery is nestled within a cave carved into a red cliff. Historical analysis of the statues inside suggests the monastery is over 1,200 years old.

The monastery is located inside a cave on the steep hill slope near the Jomsom to Kagbeni-Korala road is called ‘Minchi Lhwang’ Monastery.
It is owned by six families in Chhusang village, who take turns performing daily evening prayers and lighting lamps.

Local resident Shyam Gurung explains that the cave, carved by ancestors, is in a precarious location. While the exact age remains uncertain to the current generation, local belief holds that ancestors migrated from Manang, bringing their deities with them. The six families have long been responsible for the site’s preservation.

Given the risk of erosion and landslides on the 100-meter-high earthen cliff, Gurung urges authorities to assist in protecting this archaeological treasure. Despite the risks, he notes that the site remains intact.

The upper level of the cave houses the monastery, featuring clay Buddha statues over 800 years old. A stone statue of Green Tara, housed in a frame, is believed to be 1,200 years old. The monastery contains a dozen various forms of Buddha statues.

“A donation box is kept for visitors, and funds are used for maintenance and clearing snow from the cave roof,” Gurung said. The cave also features ancient artistic paintings on the walls and ceiling, created with earth-toned pigments that blend with the natural geography.

“The second floor contains Buddha statues and a circumambulation path. International researchers have studied the site, and some have provided technical and financial support for repairs,” Gurung added, emphasizing the need for further government intervention as the structures age.

Access to the upper levels is provided by two wooden ladders. Gurung believes that with proper promotion, the site could boost local tourism and income, serving as both a ancestral place of worship and a unique tourist destination.

Currently, the site remains largely unknown to many. Located just a five-minute walk from the main road, it holds significant potential as a historical landmark if properly preserved and promoted by local authorities.
