Kathmandu, Sept 8: Home Minister Sudhan Gurung asserted that the government is fully committed to fulfilling the dreams of those who lost their lives during last year’s Gen-Z movement, particularly their call for good-governance and an end to corruption.

Minister Gurung said so while addressing a programme organized by the Gen-Z Martyrs’ Families Welfare Society on the premises of the then Federal Parliament building in New Baneshwor, Kathmandu on Tuesday, marking the first anniversary of the movement that took place on September 8-9 in 2025.
Gurung reiterated the government would work to ensure that the aspirations for which young people took to the streets do not go unanswered.
He appealed, “Let the entire Gen Z generation be assured that good governance will be established and corruption will end in the country.”
“If another bullet has to be fired for our demands and dreams not to be fulfilled, let it be on my head”, Minister poignantly expressed.

He also urged the younger generation to remain confident, saying Prime Minister Balendra Shah and Rastriya Swatantra Party President Rabi Lamichhane would ensure the hope of Gen-Z youth do not fade. Furthermore, Minister Gurung assured that he was making every possible effort to strengthen good governance and control corruption in recognition of the trust placed in him by the people.

“As long as there is life in me, I assure you that I will not allow any Nepali to suffer,” he pledged. Recalling the Gen-Z uprising last year, Gurung lamented it was deeply unfortunate that young people raising their voices in a democratic country were met with gunfire by the government of the time.

Also addressing the event, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam argued that the Gen-Z movement erupted amid growing frustration, particularly after erstwhile government restricted social media platforms.

“The people were increasingly angry. We were fighting from inside Parliament. The single clear message of the Gen-Z movement was the demand for good governance,” Minister Gautam reminded, noting that young people who took to the streets demanding good-governance ultimately lost their lives to gunfire.
She observed that the ideas and aspirations of those who died in the movement would live in for generations.

Minister Gautam called upon everyone to view the events of September 8 and 9 from different viewpoints, saying young people who took to the streets on September 8 were demanding good governance, not seeking to overthrow or uproot the then government. She reaffirmed the incumbent government’s commitment to addressing the demands raised by Gen-Z youth.

She took the event as an opportunity to shed lights on the efforts that were underway to translate those commitments into action.
During the event, parliamentarians Som Sharma, Khagendra Sunar, Shiva Yadav, Society’s Chairperson Narayan Shrestha, Gen-Z Nepal Chairperson Badal Rai among others univocally called for collective efforts to fulfill the Gen-Z movement’s core demands of good governance and corruption control.
