KATHMANDU: Election to the HoR speaker is taking place today. The schedule is that proposing and backing to elect Speaker would take place in the meeting.
Following this, a collective deliberation on the candidacy would take place, and decision would be taken as per registration number accordingly.
For the post of Speaker, two major political parties filed candidacy at the House of Representatives on Wednesday.
Debraj Ghimire of CPN UML is the candidate on behalf of ruling alliance while Ishwori Prasad Neupane is from opposition Nepali Congress.
Ghimire reached the office of election officer at parliament secretariat building, New Baneshwor, at 1:00 pm, and Neupane at 4:00pm to file their nominations.
Following the registration, Speaker’s candidate from ruling alliance, Ghimire said, “If elected, I will run the parliament meeting in a systematic manner by taking into account the past lesson and consultation and consensus with political parties.”
He further asserted that he would be elected the Speaker and would not let any stone unturned to make the parliament effective. Ghimire said he would deliver his responsibility by rising above party interest.
Similarly, another candidate of Nepali Congress, Neupane also expressed confidence that she would be elected the Speaker. “I’ll deliver my task in a neutral manner, while ensuring justice to lawmakers and parliament.”
The HoR meeting on 10 January, 2023 directed the publication of the election schedule for today to elect HoR Speaker. Speaker should be elected among the HoR members within 15 days of the first meeting of the federal parliament, according to the constitutional provision.
