Kathmandu, April 26: Nepal on Thursday marked the 9th anniversary of the 2015 earthquake. On April 25, 2015, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal, killing around 9,000 people, and injuring thousands of others. The quake’s epicenter was Barpak in Gorkha district, northwest of Kathmandu, the federal capital. Thousands of structures, including private houses, were destroyed, and thousands of people were left displaces.
Now, Nepal however recovered from the tragedy with incredible resilience and determination shown by Nepali people. There were many helping hands nationally and internationally, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) that supported Nepal’s recovery.
Meanwhile, earlier on the occasion, the U.S. Ambassador to Nepal Dean R. Thompson visited Barpak, the earthquake epicenter, and paid tribute to those who lost their lives to the devastating earthquake. He also honored the heroism of the six U.S. Marines and seven Nepalis who lost their lives during rescue efforts after the earthquake.
“The United States offers its condolences to Nepal for the loss of so many lives. We partnered with Nepal in its reconstruction and recovery efforts and commit to continue partnering with the government of Nepal in its disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts to ensure risk mitigation and protect lives, homes, and communities.”
