Kathmandu, May 4: Nima Rinji Sherpa has climbed Mount Makalu. Sherpa, 18, stood atop the world’s fifth highest mountain at 7:20 am today, confirmed Thaneswar Guragai, General Manager for Seven Summit Treks (SST), a leading Kathmandu-based trekking and expedition company.

This achievement marks another milestone in his mission of making the ascent of all 14 peaks above 8000m in the world. So far, he has achieved the ascent of 12 of the 14th 8000er.

Just a month ago, on April 12, he scaled Annapurna without bottled oxygen. He began his climbing career at the age of 14, and his first ascent was Mount Manaslu in 2022, becoming the youngest person to scale the world’s eight highest peak.

He has achieved many feats in climbing sector. He previously held the records for the youngest climber to traverse Everest and Lhotse, and the youngest climber to climb Lhotse at the age of 17 years and 35 days. He also held the distinction of becoming the world’s youngest climber to scale K2 at the age of 17.

He also held the records for the world’s youngest climber to scale Broad Peak, G1 and G2, and Nanga Parbat.

This ascent of Makalu has brought him closer to his mission of completing the ascent of 14th 8,000er in the world. Now, there are only two mountains left to climb for him–Shishapangma and Kanchenjunga.

Nima Rinji, from Makalu in Sankhuwasabha district, is the youngest son of record holding climber, Tashi Lakpa Sherpa.
