Kathmandu, Aug 22: Cabinet meeting is scheduled to take place today at 5 pm.
One of the agenda on the table is lifting TikTok ban. The proposal to lift TikTok ban will be submitted to the Cabinet today, said Minister for Communication and Information Technology Prithivi Subba Gurung.
Being concerned about the social network site ban, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli reportedly directed the minister for do the needful in this regard. TikTok administration also wrote a letter to Communications Minister Gurung requesting that the ban be lifted.
The government led by CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ had banned the app in Nepal on November 13, 2023, reasoning that it played a role in disrupting social harmony. Despite the ban, many Nepali users are reported to be running TikTok through VPN. The parent company of Tiktok, ByteDance, has lately requested the Ministry of Communication to lift the ban as it says it is ready to follow Nepal’s laws in operating TikTok.
According to Gajendra Kumar Thakur, spokesperson for the Ministry, TikTok has sent several letters to the Government of Nepal to remove the ban, and the government is also positive about it.
