Appeal to raise voices of conservationists in Sagarmatha Sambaad

Kathmandu, May 14: Minister for Forests and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri shared that inclusive representation of all communities within the countries has been ensured in the upcoming ‘Sagarmatha Sambaad’ programme along with foreign delegates.

At the pre-dialogue event of Sagarmatha Samabaad organized by the Indigenous Nationalities Women Youth Network’ here today, Minister Thakuri mentioned that the issues of climate change on vulnerable communities will be deliberated in the event to be organized in Kathmandu from May 16.

The government of Nepal is organizing the multi-stakeholder global dialogue with an objective to deliberate on pressing global environmental challenges and to forge regional and international collaboration for climate actions and climate justice.

During the pre-dialogue discussion, Minister Thakuri asserted, “It is noted that those communities living in vicinity of nature are hardest hit by climate change impact. The government has made policy arrangement to address the issues.”

Similarly, Kusum Devi Thapa, Chairperson of Committee of Agriculture, Cooperatives and Natural Resources under the House of Representatives, viewed that Nepal should eloquently raise the voice on mitigate climate change risks in the global forums including forthcoming Sagarmatha Sambaad.

Noting that Nepal is one of the climate-vulnerable countries in the world, Thapa urged that the voices of those contributing for nature conservation or cause of climate change should be raised with priority in the upcoming Sagarmatha Sambaad.

The three-day event is expected to serve an important milestone to Nepal in highlighting Nepal’s conservation efforts and success stories in this aspect.

Likewise, Network’s Chairperson Reesha Shrestha shed light on the climate change induced problems and challenges faced by the indigenous communities who are directly connected to nature and called for sensitivity on the part of the government towards their issues.

On the occasion, Prakash Thapa, Under-Secretary at the Ministry of Forest and Environment briefed the participants about the preparations relating to the Sagarmatha Sambaad.

The upcoming event will emphasize discussions on issues such as impact of climate change, climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction, sustainable green economy, disaster risk reduction and future of humanity and will seek regional and global partnership to tackle global climate crisis, he said.
