Jhapa, July 27: Two women of Bargachhi in Damak Municipality-1 were injured after they were attacked by a wild elephant during a morning walk. The injured are 42-year-old Kabita Rai and 47-year-old Sunita Rai of Damak-1, said Khagendra Bahadur Khadka, Information Officer of the District Police Office.

The two encountered an elephant that came out of the nearby forest while they were walking on the road after leaving their house for a morning walk today.

The elephant reportedly grabbed them with its trunk and knocked them down. They have sustained injuries to their heads, hands, legs and other parts of their bodies. The injured have been taken to Damak Hospital for treatment and the condition of Sunita is said to be serious.

Six people killed in a year
The Division Forest Office has reported that six people have died in elephant attacks in various places in the district in the financial year 2081/82. According to the office’s chief, Bharatbabu Shrestha, seven people were injured in elephant attacks during the same period while four elephants were found dead.
