Kathmandu, April 9: The People’s Movement Day is being celebrated today by organizing a variety of programs to commemorate the day when democracy was restored in Nepal.
The day commemorates the restoration of democracy by ending the 30-year-old Panchayat rule on Chaitra 26, 2046 BS. The Panchayat rule of governance started by then King Mahendra on Poush 1, 2017 BS ended on Chaitra 26, 2046 BS.
The 30-year-old Panchayat system was brought down by a joint people’s movement led by the Nepali Congress along with the Left Front. Multi-party rule of governance was restored in Nepal since then.
The people’s movement held under the leadership of Nepali Congress leader Ganeshman Singh had lasted for 50 days. The people’s movement began on Falgun 7, 2007 BS, marking the day when democracy was first established in Nepal.
The then King Birendra, addressing the nation, had announced the restoration of the multi-party system on the 26th of Chaitra, 2046 BS.
