Kathmandu : Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, has said the government aims to complete projects that have been stalled for years instead of starting new ones that would place an additional economic burden on the State.
During a meeting with senior officials from the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation on Friday, the Minister stressed the need to classify projects stuck in limbo and complete them on time. He also called for visible results in the ministry’s deliveries. “Let us work in such a way that citizens can feel the reforms and see the results of our delivery within the next three months,” he said.
The Minister underlined the need for collaboration to bring about potential fiscal, governance, and structural reforms. He called for achieving goals through the maximum utilization of available skills, competency, and available budget.
Water Resources Secretary Sarita Dawadi highlighted issues related to land acquisition and tree clearance, and stressed the need to prioritize projects of national pride. Currently, six national pride projects including Babai, Sikta, Rani-Jamara-Kulariya Irrigation Project, and the Sunkoshi-Marin Diversion Multipurpose Project are in operation.
The Department of Water Resources and Irrigation is implementing various projects through 215 contracts. Of the 33 trouble-ridden projects, 22 have been cancelled, it is said.
