Baglung, May 16: For the very first time in Nepal, a groundbreaking technology for producing green hydrogen gas for cooking has been developed in Badigad Rural Municipality, Baglung.

After successfully testing hydrogen gas made from waste electricity and water, the project has now moved on to filling cylinders and using it in cooking stoves.
This initiative, which began as a pilot project three years ago, has now produced hydrogen gas and is gearing up for commercial use. It’s been demonstrated that cooking with the gas generated from this project is quite straightforward.

This innovative project is a collaborative effort involving universities and scientific institutions, including Tribhuvan University. The next steps will focus on researching safe distribution systems and expanding the commercial use of hydrogen gas, Mohandas Manandhar, President of the Nepal Energy Foundation said.

The hydrogen is extracted using electricity from the Giringdikhola small hydropower project located in Badigad Rural Municipality-2. This new technology was tested using the small hydropower project established back in 2066 BS, which had been generating electricity that was going to waste.

Over the past three years, eight cylinders have been filled with green hydrogen gas thanks to a study conducted in partnership with seven technical institutions. Following a successful initial test a year ago, the process of safely filling the cylinders has now begun.

According to Manandhar, the technology involves separating oxygen from water to extract only hydrogen, which is then stored in cylinders. He mentioned that this gas could be easily used in cooking stoves as needed.
