Tansen (Palpa), July 7: Rambha Rural Municipality in the district has honoured 15 smart mothers. They were selected for the honour based on a competition under the ‘Golden 1,000 Days’ scheme.
There were 22 health indicators set as criteria to meet the smart standard. Each indicator carried five marks. So, those achieving 110 marks were given the title of ‘smart mothers’.
Chairman of the rural municipality, Bishnu Prasad Bhandari, informed that they were honoured as part of the campaign to announce the local government a nutrition-friendly area. It is further aimed at building prosperous society where there are healthy mothers and healthy children.
The mothers receiving the title were offered shawls, Rs 10,000 cash and health and safety kits.
The indicators ranged from conducting delivery at health post to intake of folic acid during pregnancy and de-worming tablet, TT vaccine, 1225 pills of iron and calcium during pregnancy and neo/perinatal period, maintenance of infant’s weight above 2.5-kg, adequate breastfeeding and food intake.
Administration of vitamin and de-worming to infant, measurement of infant’s weight and height every three month, regular sanitation and hygiene of child and mother, absence of malnutrition in both mother and child, birth registration child, minimum two years’ of child spacing and knowledge about menstrual hygiene also included in the list of indicators, according to chairman Bhandari.
Total 138 mothers had participated in the competition. The local government has formulated a work procedure for the smart mother.
