Kathmandu, Aug 26: Today marks the 150th birth anniversary of the final prophet of Islam, Hazrat Muhammad Salallahu (Rasul), and celebrations are in full swing with a variety of events taking place across the world.
Muhammad is revered as the prophet of the Muslim community, having been born in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The Islamic calendar, which started 53 years after his birth, has now reached the year 1448.
Mecca, a sacred site since the dawn of time, was once a pilgrimage destination for worshippers of all faiths in Medina. Muslims believe that the Quran was revealed to Muhammad during his time preaching in this holy city, leading to a decline in adherence to other religions and establishing Mecca as the primary pilgrimage site for followers of Islam.
While Jerusalem was once considered the holiest place in Islam, the desire to visit Mecca at least once in a lifetime is a cherished aspiration for many Muslims.
Muhammad’s teachings continue to be celebrated for their profound impact on Islam. In honor of this special occasion, a public gathering is being held today, along with a special programme at the Nepali Jame Masjid, Kashmiri Jama Masjid, and various other locations.
