Chitwan, Aug 31: A total of 199 dead bodies in unrecognizable condition were managed with the burial after keeping their DNA safe as of last night in Chitwan. The dead bodies retrieved from various places in Chitwan following the catastrophic flash flood that ripped through Rasuwa district on August 26 were managed with the burial at the Devghat forest area in Bharatpur Metropolitan City-1.
The inhumation of the unidentified bodies is being carried out as per the ‘Directive on Management of Unidentified Bodies and Unattended Dead Bodies (first amendment), 2083’.
Chief of the District Police Office Chitwan Superintendent of Police Rameshwor Paudel said that 199 dead bodies were managed and 12 others were ascertained out of 272 dead bodies recovered in the district.
Of the total 272 dead bodies, 110 are men, 62 women, seven baby boys and six baby girls, while 87 others include the mortal remains (body parts).
The DNA samples have been kept safe, while the relatives have received the dead bodies of those identified ones.
The government is forwarding the process to inter the corpses by keeping the DNA and other marks safe. Later, the inhumed bodies will however be exhumed and handed over to the concerned families for last rites with the DNA ‘matching’. The Directive has a provision that if the heir of the deceased one is identified in the future, the interred body or organ should be exhumed and handed over to the family in a respectful manner.
