Kathmandu : The Bhotekoshi flood survivors are to be shifted to temporary residence within six months. At a dialogue event ‘Issues of Rehabilitation of Bhotekoshi Flood Survivors’ organized here today by Nepal Forum of Environmental Journalists (NEFEJ), Executive Director at National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), Dharmaraj Uprety, said that work has been advanced with the goal of constructing and handing over permanent housing for flood victims within three years.

“Temporary housing will be built before arranging permanent settlement for 5,116 families affected by floods in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Gorkha, and Dhading,” Uprey added.

The government has decided to provide flood-affected families with a relief assistance of Rs 15,000 per month for five months. For families with more than four members, additional amount of Rs 2,000 will be provided for each extra member.

He shared that the process of providing financial assistance of Rs 45,000 to affected families for the next three months has been initiated. Professor at the Institute of Engineering Sanjay Upreti stated that social, economic, and cultural aspects along with disaster and engineering aspects should also be considered during rehabilitation.

Chhedin Dolma, a local from Timure, said that they have not yet freed themselves from the mental trauma caused by the flood. Namgyal Ghale, another local, shared that they were completely displaced and now have no idea where to go.

Phurbu Dorje, the principal of Nepal National Primary School in Timure, stated that 10 students went missing in the flood and the school building was completely destroyed, leaving uncertainty about running the school and the educational environment in the coming days.

Likewise, Nirajan Paudel, a Rasuwa-based journalist, complained that he lost five family members, including his parents, in the flood, and even 50 days after the flood, they have not received any relief.
