Kathmandu, Jan 17: Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology (TIO) is set to organise an orbital fracture repair workshop on January 18, 2024. The venue for the event TIO premises.

Approximately 90 medical professionals, including oculoplastic surgeons, ophthalmologists, and maxillofacial surgeons, are expected to attend the two-day event that will feature live demonstrations, invaluable insights into the intricacies of orbital fracture repair.

Renowned oculofacial surgeon Gangadhara Sundar plays a role in organising the event with the support of Dr Purnima Rajkarnikar Sthapit, Dr Alok and Dr Rohit Saiju.

Dr Gangadhara Sundar, head and senior consultant at the Department of Ophthalmology, National University Health System, Singapore, will lead the seminar.

The highlight of the event is a surgical demonstration of orbital fracture repair using various materials like osteopore and titanium plates.

Following the surgical workshop, a Continuing Medical Education (CME) session on challenging cases in orbital trauma will be held on the same day where surgeons will present the difficult case scenarios for discussion regarding the best possible management, according to a statement issued by TIO.

On the second day on January 19, CME on challenging cases in thyroid eye disease will be held. The disease is another emerging eye disease due to increased number of people with thyroid problems. This session will be attended by oculoplastic surgeons, ophthalmologists, and endocrinologists. Dr Rohit, Dr Alark Devkota Rajouria, and head of Oculoplasty, Orbit, and Ocular Oncology Dr Purnima are the panelists.

Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology, recognised as a center of excellence for eye care in Nepal, has been at the forefront of organising comprehensive training and educational workshops for ophthalmic professionals. Dr. Sundar’s upcoming surgical demonstration marks a historic first live surgical demonstration of fracture repair for Nepal, promising to enhance the skills and knowledge of surgeons working in this field.

Committed to providing top-tier education and training, TIO has played a role in advancing eye care standards and promoting research in ophthalmology in Nepal. It has received around 500 patients with trauma to eye every year, said TIO.
