Kathmandu, Jan 24: Education is a fundamental right that every people are entitled to. Aside from empowering people to face world challenges and pursue advancements, it socialises human into society by teaching cultural values and norms. As we value education, we observe the International Day of Education to remind that why education is so important.

As the world including Nepal is celebrating the International Day of Education, USAID Nepal has reflected on its role in helping advance education system in Nepal.

Working alongside the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology of Nepal, USAID Nepal has helped over a million primary school children across 38 districts develop their reading skills, according to USAID Nepal. It has also helped in designing and implementing programmes that would support the long stay of girls in school, and trained 25,000 teachers and administrators on early-grade reading best practices.

Similarly, USAID Nepal has partnered with the Central Department of Management at Tribhuvan University, Nepal’s oldest and largest university, to organise a Business Continuity Management training course. The course is expected to build the disaster preparedness of Nepal’s universities and business community, it has been said.

While Nepal’s education system strives to equip students with knowledge and skills for a brighter future, many of Nepal’s universities and colleges reportedly lack plans to respond to potential earthquakes, floods, and other natural hazards.

In this context, USAID Nepal has expressed its commitments to helping promoting quality education in Nepal through its investment in education.

“We acknowledge the role of education in promoting peace and the importance of ensuring access to quality education for all. Let’s celebrate the transformative power of learning, and acknowledge its vital role in building a disaster-resilient future for Nepal.”

In 2018, the United Nations decided to celebrate January 24 as the International Day of Education. This decision was made by 59 countries who wanted to highlight the importance of education. Since then, every January 24 has been observed to recognize and celebrate the significance of education worldwide. The theme of the Day this year is “learning for lasting peace”.
