Kathmandu, Jan 29: The National Nursing Day is being celebrated with various programmes across the country.
The Day that falls on 15th Magh in the lunar calendar every year (January 29 this year) marks a pivotal moment in the history of Nepali nurses, the backbone of the country’s healthcare system, who have sacrificed their lives, dedicated themselves to, and played a big role in saving lives and improving the well-being of millions of Nepali people.
Historically, the Nepal’s nursing is believed to have begun in 2013 BS when some Nepali students including housewives were formally trained as nurses during the Rana regime.
In 1956, with funding and technical assistance from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Nepal’s first Nurse Training School opened its doors in Kathmandu. This marked a pivotal moment in the development of Nepal’s healthcare system, paving the way for generations of skilled and dedicated nurses.
Three years later, in 1959, the first class of public health nurses graduated from the campus in Bharatpur, Chitwan. This programme played a crucial role in strengthening Nepal’s public health infrastructure, and improving access to essential healthcare services in communities across the country.
Meanwhile, USAID has expressed its deepest gratitude to all nurses who serve Nepal with dedications and compassions, terming them true heroes. “USAID is proud to have partnered with Nepal on this journey, and we remain committed to the country’s nurses as they continue to provide vital care to all Nepali people.”
