Kathmandu : Nepal’s spring mountaineering season has concluded with a total of 1,195 domestic and international climbers securing permits to ascend 31 peaks, including the world’s highest mountain, Sagarmatha (Mount Everest).

According to the Department of Tourism, 495 climbers from 56 countries obtained permits for Mt Everest alone, comprising 390 men and 105 women. Among them, 44 climbers were from Nepal.

More than 1,000 support staff and guides also successfully reached the summit alongside the permit holders. China recorded the highest number of Everest permit holders with 159 climbers, followed by the United States (152), India (101), Germany (75), the United Kingdom (74) and Russia (70), informed the Department.

During the season, Nepali climber Kami Rita Sherpa extended his own world record by summiting Everest for the 32nd time. Among women climbers, Lhakpa Sherpa set a new milestone with her 11th ascent of Mt Everest.

The government collected a total of Rs 1.26 billion in mountaineering royalties during the spring season, with Everest contributing the largest share of the revenue.
