Lalitpur : Minister for Home Affairs Sudhan Gurung clarified that he sees his position not as a privilege, but as a responsibility to fulfill the hope and aspirations of every Nepali citizen.
Speaking at a ceremony in Lalitpur on Tuesday to unveil a statue of Binod Maharjan, who was killed during the Gen-Z movement on September 9, 2025, Minister Gurung observed that the government had a responsibility to turn into reality the dream that ‘Nepal can be built.’
The Minister reiterated, “We are on a mission to fulfill not only the dreams of the martyrs but of all Nepali. I have joined the government not to enjoy office or authority, but to serve the Nepali people. I consider the Home Minister’s chair a responsibility rather than a position.”
He added, “I am committed to working until my last breath to fulfill the dreams of the martyrs and the expectations of the people.”
Recalling the painful moment when he carried the bodies of Gen-Z movement martyrs to Pashupati Aryaghat in the wake of the uprising, Gurung said that he had never intended to enter politics.
However, he explained that sense of responsibility he felt towards the martyrs, their families and the country compelled him to take on a political role.
The Minister criticized politicians driven by corruption and the desire for power, while stressing that not all politicians should be viewed negatively.
He urged political leaders to learn from those who have demonstrated integrity and to abandon the pursuit of power for its own sake.
Gurung viewed that the people expected a government that would stand beside them in times of hardship rather than remain in offices and deliver speeches.
Furthermore, the Minister lauded the Nepal Police and Armed Police Force for their rescue and humanitarian work during disasters including recent Bhotekoshi flood.
He reaffirmed that the government was committed to boosting the morale of security personnel. Likewise, former minister and lawmaker from Lalitpur constituency no 2, Jagadish Kharel, expressed his confidence that the statue would keep alive the memory of late Binod Maharjan and inspire people to follow the path of good deeds.
He emphasized the need for political leaders to demonstrate honesty in their principles, conduct and actions. Similarly, another lawmaker Dr Toshima Karki believed that the incumbent government would continue to work as a servant of the people. Also addressing the event, Lalitpur Metropolitan City Mayor Chiribabu Maharjan paid tribute to Binod Maharjan’s contribution. He also vowed constructive support to initiatives undertaken in his name.
On the occasion Binod Maharjan’s elder brother, Kajiratna Maharjan, extended thankfulness to local social worker Prem Krishna Maharjan and ward No. 7 Chairperson Kul Bahadur Maharjan for their significant support in constructing the statue.
Similarly, Babaraj Maharjan, Chairperson of the local community improvement committee, acknowledged that the unveiling of statue of a martyr who sacrificed his life for the rights, dignity and welfare of citizens was satisfactory.
