Kathmandu, Sept 18: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Urban Development Prakash Man Singh garlanded the statue of late Ganesh Man Singh, the Supreme Commander of the people’s movement in 1990.

DPM Singh paid tribute to one of the founding Presidents of the Nepali Congress (NC) by laying wreath at the statue of late Singh at Shova Bhagwati in Kathmandu today.

The ceremony marked the 27th Memorial Day of Ganesh Man Singh.

Speaking to media persons after laying a wreath, DPM Singh emphasized the ”important” contributions of late Singh, also his father, to Nepal’s democratic movements.

The DPM recalled, “Late Singh spent more than 15 years in prison to empower citizens. He did not compromise with anyone regarding rights of the people.”

According to him, late Singh is remembered as the leader who led the establishment of democracy and restoration of democracy after the then King’s coup.

The DPM observed that late Singh could earn an identity of a people’s leader due to his unwavering commitment and dedication to make citizens sovereign and empower them.

Present in the wreath laying ceremony were NC Kathmandu chapter’s President Sabuj Baniya, NC Lalitpur chapter’s President Jitendra Shrestha alongside notable party leaders and supporters.

Ganesh Man Singh, born in Nepali month of Kartik 24 of 1972 BS at Chaksibari of Chhetrapati in Kathmandu, passed away on Asoj 2, 2054 BS at the age of 82.

Late Singh had demonstrated his exemplary political character by turning down the proposal from the then King to assume leadership of the erstwhile government and nominating his colleague Krishna Prasad Bhattarai to be the Prime Minister of Nepal instead after the success of the people’s movement.
