Kathmandu: Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Arzu Rana Deuba claimed her weeklong Geneva visit was successful and result-oriented. Minister Dr Rana who travelled to Geneva to attend the high-level segment of the 48th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council said this upon her arrival in Kathmandu today.
Minister Dr Rana had addressed to the high-level session of the UN Human Rights Council on last Tuesday. Ministers for the foreign affairs and human rights of the member nations of the UN as well as the individuals pitching for human rights were present during the session.

Upon her return to Nepal, Minister Rana informed the world community that Nepal has been working for the protection and promotion of human rights for a long time and urged all UN member nations to support Nepal’s candidacy for the next member of the Council from 2027 to 2029.

Minister Rana urged all UN member nations to cooperate Nepal’s candidacy to key positions in the United Nations, including membership in the UN Human Rights Council for the term 2027-2029, the Economic and Social Council for the term 2029-2031 and the Security Council for the term 2037-2038.

Minster Rana further said that the world community has pledged to support Nepal’s candidacy for the positions. During the visit, she held a meeting with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk and briefed him about the human rights and transitional justice situation in Nepal.

During her stay in Geneva, she held meetings with her counterparts, delegations and leaders of Switzerland, Norway, Spain, Slovakia, the Philippines, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan and Mexico to discuss matters of bilateral interests and concerns.

At a reception hosted by the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations, Geneva, Minister Rana also urged the heads of missions and representatives of more than 100 countries and officials of various international organizations, including the UN, to vote Nepal to the position of Human Rights Council member.
Minister Rana had left for Geneva on Saturday leading a six-member Nepali delegation. She returned Kathmandu on Friday afternoon.
