Kavrepalanchok, April 20: The floods and landslides triggered by incessant rains in early October last year in Kavrepalanchok caused the highest loss of life and property in Bagmati Province.
About seven months after the incident, the government has started a detailed damage assessment of private houses starting from Roshi Rural Municipality, which suffered the highest casualty in terms of life and property.
Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak inaugurated the assessment work on Wednesday from Narayantar in Roshi Rural Municipality-2. He started the detailed damage assessment by providing damage assessment certificates to three disaster survivors of Ward No. 2 of the municipality.
The government has released Rs 73.5 million in Kavre for the construction of temporary housing and 18 technicians have been deployed for a detailed damage assessment. A total of 563 houses were damaged in the disaster in Roshi Rural Municipality.
CEO of National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, Dinesh Bhatta, said that if the survivors want to build temporary and permanent houses at the same time that is also possible, but a detailed damage assessment is mandatory for that.
A total of 81 people died in Kavrepalanchok due to floods and landslides while six are still listed as missing. The floods and landslides damaged billions of rupees worth of physical structures including roads, bridges, hospitals, schools, museums, etc.
