Kathmandu, May 27: President Ramchandra Paudel has said that sustainable mountain tourism, responsible mountaineering, and the conservation of the Himalayan environment are the need of the day. Addressing the ‘Sagarmatha Summiters Summit–2026’ organised here today in honour of Mt Everest summiters from various countries around the world, President Paudel stated that the preservation of the Himalayan environment is today’s need.

“Mount Everest is not only a geographical identity of Nepal but also the pride, prestige, and an invaluable natural heritage of the entire country. The country’s economy has benefited through tourism sector through the conservation, promotion, publicity and balanced use of these assets,” he said. President Paudel stated that issues such as global warming, the impacts of climate change, and the accumulation of garbage in mountaineering areas have now emerged as challenges.

“Addressing these issues and conserving the environment and biodiversity in the Everest region, while making mountaineering safe, sustainable and technology-friendly, requires additional efforts and cooperation today,” the President reminded. He expressed the view that this conference holds special significance as it brings together Mt Everest climbers from around the world to discuss international cooperation, dialogue and awareness-raising for the protection of the Himalayas and the Himalayan environment, with a particular focus on the multifaceted aspects of the Himalayan region, including Mount Everest.

President Paudel said, “I believe that this conference will pay special attention to preserving the Mt Everest in its natural form as it represents not only the knowledge gained from the experiences and exposures during ascents, but also the pride, dignity, and identity of Nepal and Nepalis as well as the world.”
Mukunda Prasad Niraula, Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, expressed his belief that the ‘Sagarmatha Summiters Summit–2026’ will be fruitful for the promotion of tourism in Nepal. He expressed concern that the effects of climate change are impacting Mount Everest and the mountains of Nepal.
