Kathmandu, July 31: Acting Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC), Sunita Dangol said separate drain pipe systems for sewage and rainwater outlet would be devised at Maitighar Mandala area for a long-term solution to recurring flooding problem during the rainy season.
Talking to RSS, she said the drainage system is unable to bear the load when there is more than usual rain. “Currently, in most places, sewage and rainwater flow through the same system so it does not work with unusual rainfall.”
She shared the KMC’s ongoing initiatives to address both immediate and long-term problems, laying emphasis the need to work on a master plan in such areas.
“For a long-term solution, it is necessary to transform the management of sewage and rainwater into separate systems”, she said, adding investment in such infrastructure development should be increased through coordination among concerned agencies.
Highlighting that the old sewage system cannot meet the current needs due to rapid urban expansion, Dangol stressed the importance of developing a modern rainwater management system (storm water drainage) with a long-term perspective.
Such problems are being induced frequently due to random land encroachment in the KMC, she shared.
