Kathmandu : A high-level discussion on waste management in the Kathmandu Valley reinforced commitment to launching the activities in cooperation among concerned local levels.
A stakeholders’ meeting held at the Ministry of Infrastructure Development on Friday dwelt on pressing issues relating to garbage management. The event was led by Dr Bikram Timilsina, a Member of the House of Representatives from Nuwakot constituency no 1 and Minister for Information and Communications.
The chiefs of various municipalities in the valley, officials from the Environment Department, waste management experts and local residents affected by the Bancharedanda landfill site attended the discussion. The affected people shared the problems they were facing.
Minister Dr Timilsina underscored the need for addressing the concerns of people near the Bancharedanda area with effective waste management. Garbage management is a top priority of the government, he said, adding that the government is now committed to finding effective solutions to the problems they are facing.
“Government is ready to advance both policy and practical measures to address the challenge. The federal government expects cooperation from all municipalities and agencies concerned to resolve the problems,” he stated. He however reminded the constitutional provision of waste management responsibility of the local levels, urging each municipality to manage its waste effectively.
“The federal government provides necessary support and facilitation to the local levels for it. Issues of land acquisition should be sorted out on time for ease the waste management. Even the amendment of laws could be considered for it and discussions are underway accordingly,” the Minister added.
In the meeting, the local level people’s representatives shared their activities and challenges in terms of waste management.
