The European Union said it expected to be debriefed by Washington after US envoy Steve Witkoff’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday.
President Donald Trump’s special envoy Witkoff said he had brought “ideas” for a possible Ukraine peace deal to his talks with Putin in Saint Petersburg.
The meeting comes after a top EU official took part in a meeting involving Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky and Witkoff in Oslo on Tuesday.
“The main aim was to explore if the parameters are there for a possible move to trilateral or even multilateral talks with Ukraine and Russia present at the same table,” EU spokeswoman Paula Pinho said.
“The core topics of the discussion yesterday were territory, security, and post-war prosperity, and we expect that upon return of the US delegation from Russia, a debriefing will take place.”
