Kathmandu: Nepali people leaving the country in hordes for foreign employments and other purposes shows the worse situation facing the country. More than 3,000 Nepali people are leaving for foreign countries for various purposes on a daily basis, according to available data.
Going for foreign employments leaving behind the country and the family is a painful situation itself. However, the destiny of the departing Nepali people to go for foreign employments looks happier than sad itself due to their compulsion under various circumstances like a lack of job opportunities within the country and political instability.
Political stability and the opening of factories would create job opportunities, thus helping Nepali youths engage at home. But sadly, the state does not seem to be much concerned about creating job opportunities. It manifests in country’s industries being closed in every single day.
Corruption, inflation, economic crisis and lack of good governance are commonplace. Every year, the trade deficit has increased. But, the government is not worried. Rather than creating jobs, the government seems to be enjoying the exodus of Nepali people to foreign countries.
The government is happy about the recent increase in remittances. It is proud that its main income source is remittances. This way, the government’s intention seems clear.
Nepali people are going abroad mainly for jobs and education. Regardless of the pretext of going abroad, the departing Nepali people complain of the lack of job opportunities and facilities provided by the state back in Nepal. Sadly, most of those who go abroad for further studies do not make it back, costing the country.
Things luring Nepali people into foreign countries
Comparing developed foreign countries with developing Nepal is not appropriate. There is a vast difference between Nepal and developed countries in terms of culture, economic development, infrastructure, education, healthcare, social system, and political stability.
The countries where Nepali people aspire to go are particularly economically developed, have better infrastructure development, higher living standards, more job opportunities, advanced healthcare and education systems, and more facilities and services compared to Nepal. They can also offer more political stability, and a more diverse cultural landscape due to their high multiculturalism and global influence.
However, Nepal has its own unique charm with its rich cultural heritage, stunning natural beauty, and traditions that are significantly different from those found in many foreign countries. Nepal has yet to tap its abundant potential by exposing its natural beauty to the world.
Although tourism is Nepal’s main source of foreign exchange and revenue, Nepal has not been able to promote, engage and develop the sector.
Nepal’s situation in the future?
Most of those who are leaving for foreign country are energetic youths, who are worthy of labour. There is a tendency for Nepali youths heading to foreign countries searching for better opportunities in particular.
This exodus could potentially lead to a demographic imbalance within the country if it continues at this significant rate. If this trend continues, it could actually result in the population of aging people in Nepal without a proportional influx of young people returning to or staying in the country.
The latest census shows that there is a rapid migration from hilly areas to Terai and from urban areas and hilly areas to foreign countries. The migrant people are a majority of the youths. This trend is an indicative of a big social problem way forward.
As per the census, until 2046 BS, the pressure of population has gradually shifted from the hill to Tarai. Currently, 54 percent of the total population in the Terai is human settlements. It shows that the mountains and hills are gradually emptying.
According to the national census, 2078 and other sources, natural disasters, unemployment and political instability are major factors blamed for the increasing migration. Closely observing, migration has intensified in the family of which members have gone abroad for job opportunities.
With family members sending money from abroad, the trend of migrating to cities seeking facilities and better opportunities has increased. It has come with many disadvantages like the disintegration of the family.
In many cases, young people tend to migrate to cities in search of better opportunities leaving behind only old and incapacitated people. This has resulted in many disadvantages like arable lands remaining uncultivated leading to famine. Elderly people have their own story to tell. With none to care for them, they are forced to live a hell life.
It has also led to family disturbances in the society. The society that enjoys and rejoices together has recently become single. It remains to be witnessed how it will affect its social environment, social structure, culture and tradition in the future.
