Kathmandu, May 8: The World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is being observed in different countries across the globe today by organizing several programmes with the slogan ‘Unity in Humanity’.

In a message delivered today on the occasion, it is highlighted that Red Cross volunteers are not distant actors but are members of the communities they serve, often aiding neighbors while facing crises themselves.

The day emphasizes the commitment to humanitarian values in a divided world, addressing the needs of marginalized groups and fostering resilience.
Additionally, it has also been urged that impartial, independent, and neutral humanitarian assistance reach all those in need, in remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives to human service.

The concept of observing World Red Cross Day was proposed after the First World War, with the idea of conducting a global campaign for peace.
The day was first observed on 8 May 1948. Since 1984, it has been celebrated as ‘World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day’.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent have stated that 8 May is observed on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the first Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Henry Dunant.

The Red Cross and Red Crescent have provided service during disasters, wars, epidemics, and humanitarian crises through millions of volunteers.
