Chitwan, Aug. 6: The BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital in Chitwan has initiated preparations to establish a bone marrow transplant unit. For this project to materialize, the necessary infrastructure and medical preparations are being set up with Chinese assistance.
The Chinese government is supporting by funding the construction of the building, procurement of medical equipment and providing training for doctors and nurses.
Acting Executive Director of the Hospital, Dr Umesh Nepal said that a Chinese team visited the hospital recently and carried out the assessments for the infrastructure development and requirements for the project advancement.
The Chinese team held meetings with officials from the Bharatpur Metropolitan City, the Urban Development and Building Construction Project and the Bharatpur Distribution Centre of Nepal Electricity Authority and discussed various aspects of the project.
Dr Nepal stated that the project would be advanced now after signing a project agreement with the government. The Chinese side is planning to begin the project in 2026 with a plan to complete the project within one and a half years. Officials said that the Chinese government is expected to provide assistance worth 37 million RMB to complete the project. An agreement has already been signed between the Government of Nepal and China’s International Development Cooperation Agency for project implementation.
The bone marrow transplant facility will have five beds. Currently, three doctors and some nursing staffers from the hospital are receiving specialized training in China to work in the unit. Likewise, additional human resources will also get training opportunity in China to run the unit, it is said. The hospital will be the country’s first state-of-the-art bone marrow transplant unit of its kind.
